STUDENT PLACEMENTS

Student Placements

*

As a student you would provide support to professional economists dealing with a range of issues affecting Government policy.  See profiles of some students currently working in HM Treasury

We offer two types of placements at present:

  • 12 month sandwich student placements; and
  • 6-12 week summer vacation placements

To be eligible for either of these placements, students must be a UK national, Commonwealth citizen or a member of the European Economic Area (EEA); and, be studying for a degree in economics or, if it is a joint degree, economics must comprise at least 50% of the total course, or doing a Masters degree in economics.  Due to the nature of the work, the placements are not open to first year undergraduates.

Sandwich Student Placements

The GES centrally-run sandwich student placement scheme for 2009/10 is now open.  The placements are for 12 months from summer 2009 and are open to economic students who are seriously considering a career in the Government Economic Service after graduation.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • be a UK national, Commonwealth citizen, or a member of the European Economic Area (EEA); and
  • be studying for a degree in economics or, if it is a joint degree, economics must comprise at least 50% of the total course, or doing a Masters degree in economics.  You should be on course for a 2:1.   Due to the nature of the work, the placements are not open to first year undergraduates.

Applications will only be considered on the attached application form. It must include a nomination by an economics tutor, confirming that the applicant is suitable for an economics placement. Please scan in the tutor’s signature and send it with your application or, if that is not possible, please ask your tutor to email us with the name of the applicant being nominated, the name of the university and the degree course.

In sifting the applications to decide which candidates to invite for interview, particular weight will be attached to the sections on competences, extra-curricular activities and career choice. Candidates who are successful at the sift stage are likely to be invited for interview in the period 10 – 28 November 2008.

The names of the participating Departments and the job descriptions are not yet available – they will be posted on the website in September.  Please do not submit your application form until you have that information.

The closing date for receipt of applications is Monday 13 October 2007.

As part of the interview process, some Departments require applicants to sit a numeracy test.  Below is a link to a couple of examples of the types of questions usually involved.

Summer Vacation Placements

The competition for summer vacation placements in 2008 is now closed.

If you applied before the deadline of 25 January 2008 and your application was unsuccessful at the sift stage, you will have received an email to that effect. If your application was successful at the sift stage, it will have been passed to one of the participating Departments who will contact you direct.

Details of the 2009 summer vacation placements will appear towards the end of 2008.

Work Experience

There is no centrally-run unpaid work experience programme at present.  However, individual Departments might offer such placements but you will need to contact them direct.
