Think
of all the issues that have hit the headlines recently.
Behind
every story there will be an economist,
delving into the
details to establish the economic
pros and cons.
It’s
important work, which is why we need people
who can handle
responsibility and the knowledge
that they will be affecting
lives nationwide.
The
Government Economic Service (GES) is the
UK’s largest
recruiter of economists with over
1000 professionals in more
than 30 departments
and agencies. The GES can give you access
to a
wide variety of economist career options.
Whichever one
you chose, you will be getting to
the heart of complex issues
that are determining
the nation’s future.
There are 3 ways to join:
- Fast Stream Assistant Economist
- Economic Adviser
- Students Placements
Fast
Stream Assistant Economist Appointments:
These appointments are at graduate entry level or for those
with less than 3 years work experience as a professional
economist
To apply for a Fast Stream
Assistant Economist post,
you should already have, or hope to obtain in 2009, a
first or upper second class honours degree in economics, or a
postgraduate degree in economics. At least 50% of the course
modules must be in economics. You must have studied both macro
and microeconomics to qualify. If you graduated more than 2
years ago you must be in an economics based job to demonstrate
you have kept your economics skills up to date.
All applications should be submitted online.
The 2008 Recruitment scheme is now closed.
The 2009 recruitment scheme is likely to open mid September
2008. More details will be available soon.
For
details of how to apply please see ‘Applying
for Assistant Economist posts’.
Applying
for temporary work at Assistant Economist level
We
also occasionally recruit temporary Assistant Economists, via
a centralised scheme, for one year appointments with the
expectation that they will apply for permanent appointment,
via the Fast Stream Assessment Centre, during that year. If
successful, they will remain in their department for a further
12 months before moving to another department.
Economic
Adviser Appointments
As well as a 2.1 or a MSc in Economics, you will need to
demonstrate substantial current experience in your career as a
professional economist.
We run three centralised schemes a year on behalf of a
number of government departments. These schemes are usually
held in January/February: May/June and October/November.
For
details of how to apply please see ‘Applying
for an Economic Adviser appointment.’
Student
Placements
As a student you would provide support to professional
economists dealing with a range of issues affecting Government
policy.
We offer two types of placements
- 12 month sandwich student placements; and
- 6-12 week summer vacation placements.
To apply for either of these placements, students must be
studying for a degree in economics or, if it is a joint
degree, economics must comprise at least 50% of the total
course.
The Sandwich Student 2009/2010 Scheme is now open.
For details of how to apply please see ‘Applying
for a student placement’.
