What do government economists do?

HM Treasury London

Her Majesty's Treasury, by its very nature, is at the heart of government. The decisions its Ministers make affects everyone, whether as individuals, as part of a company or as a nation.

Our staff work at the centre of things. They make a difference and so can you.

What do our economists do?

As an assistant economist with us you might find yourself:

  • providing analysis of tax policy
  • analysing the economies of particular countries and providing advice to Ministers accordingly
  • advising on the economic effects on changes in competitions and/or regulation policy
  • forecasting central government current and capital expenditure
  • ensuring the economic content of Ministers' speeches is correct and understandable
  • providing analyses and forecasts on the UK economy.

Our economists get the chance to work with, and sometime pit their intellectual skills against, people from other government departments, the public sector, Europe, and the private sector. We have an active Interchange programme, so you may get the opportunity to travel. We also have our own internal training and development programme, designed to optimise your chances of promotion. You are never too old, or too clever, to stop learning.

Assistant Economist starting salary is £25,938 with additional salary for a relevant MSc or previous experience.
