National School of Government (Formerly the Civil Service College)London and Sunningdale The College has a remit to meet the training needs of Departments and Agencies, particularly at senior levels, and to help the cross-fertilisation of ideas between Departments and between the Civil Service and the wider economy. The core of the economist's contribution to this process lies in conveying to public sector managers the meaning and the importance of efficient resource allocation, training them in the use of techniques which can help to raise efficiency and helping them to apply these techniques in their organisations. As an economist at the College you would have an opportunity to explore the application of economic techniques across a wide range of Departments, Agencies and other public and private sector organisations both at home and abroad. The College delivers its services not only by means of training courses but also via consultancy work. You might find yourself, for instance, training middle managers in investment appraisal techniques, helping senior officials to carry forward the most recent financial management initiative, working with Agency executives on the formulation of their strategic plans or advising an Eastern European nation on how to introduce free market mechanisms.
