What do government economists do?

Department for Work and Pensions

The DWP plays a central role in planning and delivering the government’s social welfare policies. From the cradle to the grave, we fight child and pensioner poverty, we help people find work and we provide support for those who can’t. We have many exciting opportunities for economists and other analysts to work at the heart of policy development.  Across the country, we administer benefit spending of over £123 billion per year, and working with us gives you the chance to play an influential role in the strategic development of the future of UK social welfare policy.

The intellectual challenge we offer is enormous; so too is the potential to make a real contribution to some of the biggest long-term issues in UK public policy. Economists, along with Statisticians and Social Researchers, make up the key elements of the Department’s drive towards evidence based policy making and are taking lead roles in developing the its strategy for meeting its targets.

The DWP is an equal opportunities employer aiming for the widest possible diversity in its workforce, drawing recruits from every section of the community. Established in 2002 it is a values-driven organisation that focuses on achieving the best, respecting people, making a difference and looking outward.

Assistant Economist starting salary is £27,970 with additional salary for a relevant MSc or previous experience.
